The New Beginning: Daniel Dubois On A “Fresh Start” To Become A Two-Time Heavyweight Champion

Daniel Dubois posted today, giving his rationale for leaving trainer Don Charles after 18 months, saying he needs a “fresh start” with his pro career. Dubois, 27, is now trained by Tony Sims.

Dubois’s ‘Fresh Start’ Rationale

Daniel states that he plans on making a push to become a two-time heavyweight champion, and he needs new input from a coaching perspective.

The former IBF heavyweight champion Dubois (22-3, 21 KOs) lost his title in a round knockout defeat against IBO, WBA, WBC, and WBO champ Oleksandr Usyk in their rematch on July 19th at Wembley Stadium in London.

Fans have openly criticized Dubois for abandoning Charles, believing that he’s using him as the scapegoat and failing to take responsibility for his defeat.

The Coaching History

Dubois’s new trainer, Tony Simms, is the fourth coach that Daniel has worked with during his eight-year professional career. His past coaches:

  • Don Charles
  • Shane McGuigan
  • Martin Bowers

Dubois’ decision to throw a small party before his rematch with Usyk has been second-guessed by fans on social media. They felt that was a foolish move for him to take, treating the fight as if it were a sure-thing win.

Retired former heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis was also known for having many trainers. He was trained by Emanuel Steward, Pepe Correa, and Harold Knight.

Dubois’s Career Reset

“I’d like to thank Don Charles for the hard work he’s put into me over the last 18 months. But now, I feel like I need a fresh change, a new start for this next phase of my career where I look to become a two-time heavyweight champion of the world,” said Daniel Dubois to DAZN Boxing.
