Canelo Hid After Benavidez’s KO

Jose Benavidez Sr. states that he thinks Canelo Alvarez may have gone and hid in the “closet” after watching ‘The Mexican Monster’ David Benavidez knock out Anthony Yarde in the sixth round last Saturday night.

Benavidez Sr. says that Canelo (63-3-2, 39 KOs) will have the “shadow” for the rest of his life of the fight that he failed to take against Benavidez. In other words, he’ll be haunted and filled with regret.

Canelo’s decision not to fight his son, Benavidez, seems to bother Jose Sr. a lot. He brings him up frequently during interviews, and he goes on mini-rants.

“I think what Canelo was thinking when he saw the fight is that he started seeing David getting better and better. Maybe he went and hid behind his closet or something. He was just terrified,” said Jose Benavidez Sr. to Fight Hub TV, guessing what Canelo Alvarez did after watching WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez’s seventh-round knockout win over David Benavidez on November 22nd.

It would be good for Benavidez Sr. to put Canelo out of his mind. He’s 35 now, coming off a loss to Terence Crawford, and doesn’t have much time left before he retires. Benavidez doesn’t need Canelo to carve his legacy.

Boxing fans will give Benavidez tremendous respect if he faces IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia in 2026, if he successfully beats WBA and WBO champion Gilberto Ramirez on May 2.

“The person that Canelo doesn’t want to face is David Benavidez, ‘The Mexican Monster.’ So, that’ll be his shadow for the rest of his life because everybody knows that’s the fighter he needed to face, and he didn’t want to face,” said Benavidez Sr.
