Sam Eggington earns Lifetime Achievement Award but says he’s not done fighting yet

Sam Eggington is unsure how to take his latest accolade — but is sure he wants to fight again.

The WBC will be represented in Cannock on Thursday, November 27 when promoter Scott Murray stages his latest Excelsior Sporting Club fight night in Bar Sport’s Premier Suite. They will be there to hand Eggington a Lifetime Achievement Award.

It is in recognition of a 45-fight pro career that includes winning British, Commonwealth, European, IBO world and WBC Silver belts at super-welterweight and middleweight.

His defence of the WBC Silver middleweight title against Bilal Jkitou in Coventry in 2021 was named fight of the year by the British Boxing Board of Control.

Eggington threw a staggering 1,317 punches at the Frenchman in the 12-round fight – an average of 109 per round – to win a split decision in front of the Channel Five cameras.

Eggington hasn’t fought since beating Lee Cutler in April and the 32 year old admits news of his award left him with mixed emotions.

“I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing. I’m happy to get it, but I don’t know if they are trying to tell me I’m old and past it!”

A pro since 2012, Eggington looked far from finished when besting Cutler on a technical points decision, capturing the WBC International Silver super-welterweight championship.

“I didn’t just beat him, I won a belt as well and I thought people would want it. But I haven’t had any offers. It’s late in my career and I want to be active, but there’s nothing I can do if people don’t want to fight.

“I don’t help myself. I’m not big on social media, I don’t run my mouth off and I don’t scratch people’s backs. That doesn’t help. But I do feel I do my job well – when I get the chance. I know I’ve had a good career so I can’t moan too much. I just want to fight sooner rather than later.”

Despite his campaign being honoured in its current state, ‘The Savage’ wants fans to know that it isn’t over.

“People have been telling me I’m finished since I was 25. I just have to keep proving people wrong. My bubble hasn’t burst yet.”
