Catterall Calls Out Haney, High Output Could Break Him

Jack Catterall has called out newly crowned WBO Welterweight champion Devin Haney for a title shot following his big win last weekend over champion Brian Norman Jr.

Ranked at #2 WBO at 147, Catterall (32-2, 14 KOs) posted on social media in a message to Haney (33-0, 15 KOs), “WBO #1 let’s go.” He’s not ranked #1, but he is the top contender in the WBO’s rankings for Haney’s belt.

A Style Built to Break Devin

The 32-year-old Catterall isn’t elite, but neither is Haney. They’re both about the same level talent-wise. It would be another 50-50 type of fight for Devin if he were to pull the trigger on the crafty, speedy Catterall to face him in the UK or Las Vegas next.

Why Catterall Won’t Be Neutralized

A significant problem for Haney is Catterall’s punch output. He throws a lot of punches, and he can’t be neutralized by running and holding, as Devin has done in his last two fights against Norman Jr. and Jose Ramirez. Catterall’s feet are too quick, and he’s excellent at fighting through a clinch to get an arm free to keep throwing.

Devin and his dad, Bill Haney, haven’t said who they want to face in the first defense of his WBO belt. Haney wants a rematch with Ryan Garcia, but he’s busy challenging Mario Barrios on February 21, 2026, for his WBC welterweight title.

That leaves Haney in need of an opponent to defend his WBO strap against. Catterall would be the ideal guy, as he’s popular in the UK and solid enough that there wouldn’t be a backlash if Devin picked him for his first defense.

Punch Output Problem for Haney

The speedy, defensive Catterall isn’t a big punching welterweight, but his sturdy chin, high volume, and southpaw stance would make him a nightmare for Haney to deal with. He’s much more experienced than Devin’s last opponent, Norman Jr. (28-1, 22 KOs), who looked lost inside the ring last Saturday night in Riyadh.

In Catterall’s last fight against Ekow Essuman on November 15, 2025, he knocked him out in the 11th round in London. It was a one-sided fight for Jack against the top 10 contender Essuman.

The Matchroom-promoted Catterall is not indecisive about what to do against crafty fighters that choose to game the system by holding excessively, as Haney did against Norman Jr., George Kambosos Jr., and Ryan Garcia. Again, the punch output alone from Catterall could prove to be too much for Devin.
