Deontay Wilder weighed in at 225.5 pounds while his opponent Tyrrell Anthony Herndon came in at 218.25 lbs at Thursday’s weigh-in for their 10-round headliner this Friday, June 27th.

The former WBC heavyweight champion Wilder (43-4-1, 42 KOs) and Herndon (24-5, 15 KOs) had a lengthy face-off that seemed to go on forever. Wilder, 39, wanted to send a message that he means business.

“I’m mentally focused on completing the task. It’s all about having fun and still accomplishing the goals I have,” said Wilder to Boxing News channel about his fight against Herndon on Friday.

Until Deontay proves that he’s “mentally focused,” those are just words. He’s got to prove that he’s able to apply what he’s learned in training camp by going on the attack early against Herndon.

In Wilder’s last two losses to Zhilei Zhang and Joseph Parker, he wasn’t throwing and wasting energy by moving around the ring. Deontay’s now ex-trainer, Malik Scott, wanted to box, and that was a mistake because he gave up his only chance of beating those fighters by not using his best asset – his power.

“I’m a knockout artist. That’s just what I do. I’m the hardest puncher in boxing history. I just need to do what I’ve been trained to do,” said Deontay.

Knockout Artist Wilder: Confidence Issues?

The knockouts have dried up for Deontay, with only one in the last five fights. He’s lost four of those contests, and he’s looked hesitant to throw for fear of being countered. Some believe that Wilder’s loss to Tyson Fury in their second fight in 2020 ruined his confidence, making him afraid to throw.

Herndon’s Power: A Threat to Wilder

If Deontay continues to be like that, he’ll lose on Friday night against Herndon because he’s got similar power to Fury. Herndon doesn’t club or throw rabbit punches like Fury, but he hits just as hard. This is a fight where Wilder needs to bring back his vintage form to win.

“That’s to whoop some a**, and knock some people out in devastating fashion. I truly believe I’ve been restored in a lot of things. I don’t get excited about hearing about it. I’m not putting no energy into that no more,” said Wilder about a fight with Anthony Joshua.

Wilder vs. Joshua: Future Implications

Wilder is a fighter that Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, has repeatedly mentioned as a possibility for him to fight this year. If Hearn is serious, a move could be made to make the Joshua-Wilder fight if Deontay is victorious against Herndon on Friday night.

A loss for Wilder would permanently ruin his chances of making the Joshua fight happen. That would be the Bronze Bomber’s fifth defeat in his last six fights.
