Terence Crawford Doubts Credit For Canelo Alvarez Win On Sept 13: Dismissal Predicted

Terence Crawford says he doesn’t think he’s to receive credit from people if he successfully defeats Canelo Alvarez on September 13th. Crawford predicts that fans and the media will find reasons to dismiss his win in the same way they did when he beat Errol Spence Jr. in 2023.

Canelo’s Decline

There are already fans who are saying that Canelo (63-2-2, 39 KOs) is on the decline, showing signs of being a shot fighter after his recent performance against William Scull.

They state that Canelo looked slow and looked nothing like the fighter he’d been seven years earlier when he’d beaten Gennadiy Golovkin in 2018. Canelo clearly is NOT the fighter he once was, but neither is Crawford. He looked nothing like his best from years ago against Israil Madrimov last August.

Crawford Predicts Fan Dismissal

“The same thing that happened with Spence. They’re going to figure out some kind of excuse why Terence Crawford was successful in the Canelo Alvarez fight,” said Crawford to Fighthype when asked if he believes he’ll receive credit for beating Canelo by fans.

Fans will make light of Crawford’s win if he beats Canelo because he’s catching him at the right time of his long 20-year career. He’s been in a lot of hard fights against formidable opposition that are far better than the limited fighters on Crawford’s 41-0 resume.

If Crawford were to beat fighters like David Benavidez, Dmitry Bivol, Artur Beterbiev, and David Morrell, he would receive credit from fans.

Crawford’s Future: Retirement or Big Paydays?

“I don’t know. We shall see,” said Crawford when asked if he’ll retire after the Canelo fight.

Whether Crawford retires or not will come down to how well he performs against Canelo and whether Turki Alalshikh will continue to offer him big money. Crawford reportedly made $10-20 million for his fight against Israil Madrimov last August.

For his title superfight against Alvarez on September 13th on Netflix, Terence is expected to get a minimum purse of $50 million.

So, if Alashikh continues to pay Crawford that kind of money to fight other guys, he’ll stick around indefinitely until he’s no longer offered that kind of dough. Turki may lose interest in Crawford if he’s beaten or the events involving him do poorly, like with his last fight against Madrimov.

Mayweather Record Not Crawford’s Focus

“He thinks I’m not going to show him nothing new that he hasn’t seen before. Not at all,” said Bud on whether he’ll go after Floyd Mayweather’s 50-0 record if he’s victorious against Canelo.

Understandably, Crawford has no interest in sticking around to try and break Floyd Mayweather Jr’s 50-0 record.

With Terence’s focus on only taking the best-paying fights and fighting only on an annual basis, it would require that he fight another eight years until he’s 45 to break Floyd’s record.

Tough Fights for Mega-Paydays

A bigger problem for Crawford is that he would be expected to fight increasingly tougher opposition than Canelo, such as Dmitry Bivol, David Benavidez, or Artur Beterbiev, to continue to get his big paydays from the Saudis.

Initially, Crawford would be given beatable opposition, like Hamzah Sheeraz, Chris Eubank Jr., or Edgar Berlanga. But if he got past those flawed fighters, he would have to earn his mega-paydays against the sharks, Benavidez, Bivol, and Beterbiev if he’s still around.
