Is This Retirement? George Kambosos Jr.’s Emotional Farewell Message Following Richardson Hitchins Defeat

George Kambosos Jr. posted a cryptic message on X, hinting at retirement following his 8th-round TKO defeat against IBF light welterweight champion Richardson Hitchins last Saturday night at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Kambosos Jr. Hints Retirement

The wording by ‘The Emperor’ Kambosos (22-4, 10 KOs) used in his emotional post on X sounded like a farewell, saying, “I always believed in myself” and “Thanks to all the boxing fans for all the love and support.”

If this is the end for Kambosos, he retires as a wealthy millionaire and revels in his victory over Teofimo Lopez years ago. That’s the only notable win on ‘The Emperor’ Kambosos’ 12-year career resume.

It would be pointless for Kambosos to continue his career, as he won’t receive any more world title shots or lucrative paydays against notable fighters like Teofimo and Devin Haney. He got a lot of mileage out of his win over Lopez, transmuting that victory into a nice retirement nest egg of millions to live on.

Why Kambosos Should Retire Now

The 32-year-old Kambosos looked closer to 40 last night, not even trying to battle an average-looking Hitchins (20-0, 8 KOs). He soaked up a beating until being stopped by a bodyshot from the Brooklyn, New York-born Richardson in round eight. Kambosos calls himself a warrior, but he didn’t fight like one.

In George’s career-best win over Teofimo Lopez in 2021, he attacked relentlessly. Again, he didn’t do that against Hitchins, choosing to stay on the outside and eat jabs for eight rounds.

If he had blitzed the light-hitting defensive artist Hitchins from round one, he’d have stood a better chance. He’d still likely have lost due to his lack of power and size compared to the giant welterweight-sized Hitchins. His chances would have been a lot better than the meek way he fought. Kambosos got chewed up on the outside against what some fans labeled a weight bully.

Hitchins Chooses Easy Fights

It was a letdown on Hitchins’ part that he chose Kambosos to defend his IBF 140-lb title against, given that the Aussie had arguably lost four out of his last five fights. Hitchins’ choosing Kambosos as his opponent over his #1 IBF contender, Subriel Matias, showed what he’s all about. He’s not trying to fight the best. It’s all about money for Richardson.

It’s hard not to see Richardson Hitchins as a fake. If he were for real, he’d be fighting killers like Matias, Gary Antuanne Russell, Ernesto Mercado, and Keyshawn Davis. After the fight last night, the only names Hitchins called out were Teofimo and Devin Haney. That suggests that he’s just after money, wanting to get it before he’s exposed. The above fighters, Russell, Mercado, Matias, and Keyshawn, would all likely beat Hitchins.

It’s a tough game but one game that I have always loved no matter what. I look at myself in the mirror and I know that I always believed in myself took on the absolute best and always chased greatness. A great trophy cabinet, a hell of a resume, so much love and support from the…
